Commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson

Veterans Day is our day to commemorate the patriotism, service and sacrifice of all those who serve or have served in our U.S. military. We pay honor this day to our service members, past and present.

This year’s anniversary is a historic occasion for the Soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division as we celebrate our centennial legacy as part of the American forces assembled for the First World War. The 4th Infantry Division formed part of the First American Army in the fighting in the Vesle, at St. Mihiel and in the Meuse-Argonne in France. The “Ivy” Division was the only American force to fight in the British, French and German sectors during the First World War.

Our Soldiers today demonstrate the courageous nature of our country and the same dedication and perseverance of our predecessors. Over the last 16 years millions of young men and women from all walks of life have volunteered to serve their country in a time of war. We now have the largest population of young veterans since the Vietnam War. Today offers us the opportunity to thank all of the Soldiers for volunteering when their country needed them, to thank the Families for all of their sacrifices in support of their Soldiers, and to thank our communities who support and care for our military Families.

Today we have the opportunity to recognize and thank the generations of patriots and all of those who contribute to the strength of this great nation.

Steadfast and Loyal!
